Finishing the glove: How does it work?
Mar 21, 2018

The manufacturing process of the glove generally includes a cleaning hand mold, latex impregnation, crimping and detachment. However, due to the material itself, only completing these four parts can not make the gloves easy to wear. There are many ways to solve this problem now, including powder, chlorination, polymer coatings, and polyurethane finishes.

Powdering

Powdered gloves are called powder gloves. As the name suggests, it is to use a powder coating on the gloves to absorb excess water on the hands so that the wearer can freely wear them off. The powder application process occurs with the manufacturing process. Most of the previous hand molds were powder molds, so the gloves produced were powdered. These powders contain the original talc to technically modified corn starch. However, powdered gloves are not suitable for some biological and chemical processes. Because the powder may interfere with these production processes: such as chemical seals or wound closure (the powder may cause it to remain). Powder can also destroy paints and varnishes. To this end, manufacturers have taken some alternative approaches.

Chlorination

Chlorination is a powder-free treatment of gloves. It is divided into a single chlorine wash and double chlorine wash. Chlorine wash is divided into chlorine solution or hypochlorite solution. This chlorine washing process reduces the amount of powder adhered to the gloves and also makes the texture of the gloves relatively softer. For latex gloves, chlorine can reduce the latex proteins in latex so that they do not sensitize. However, chlorination shortens the product's shelf life because the chemicals decompose the glove material. Although this process was developed for latex gloves, it can also be used for nitrile gloves. AmmexGloveworks heavy orange nitrile gloves are examples of chlorinated gloves.

Polymer coating

The invention of the polymer coating enables disposable powder-free gloves to be used in large quantities on the market. It opens up a whole new process: workers use polymers such as silicones, acrylics and gels to make gloves easier to wear. This is because the polymer coating has a smaller surface friction than the glove material so that it slides more easily on the hand. This process is generally used in nitrile and latex gloves most often before gloves are removed from the mold. For example, Ammex Gloveplus black nitrile gloves use polymer coatings.

Polyurethane

Polyurethanes can reduce the amount of powder adhered to the gloves and are generally applied inside the gloves to make the gloves easier to wear. Polyurethanes are most often used in vinyl gloves.

The glove's post-treatment process makes it easy to wear, and users can get a seamless experience when wearing gloves. Especially the chlorination process, for workers who need to wear gloves all day, the feel (relative powder application process) will be more flexible.

In short, the four advanced processes of “powdering, chlorination, polymer coating, and polyurethane” can make disposable gloves easier to wear and more comfortable.
